Data centres require a lot of HVAC condensers-chillers-fansbecause the computer banks, which operate 24/7, are temperature-sensitive andproduce operational heat. If the interior temperature rises above an acceptablelevel it could damage hardware and destroy data files. Cooling is evolving fromair to more effective liquid cooling and this has introduced a new generationof HVAC machinery. Depending on the number of rows, a typical data centre mightneed up to 100 chillers. We know of a data centre project in Sydney which willhave just under 1,000 chillers. One challenge this presents is industrialnoise. The mechanical equipment is loud (approx. 100 decibels) and it runsnon-stop. In order to capture errant mechanical and air movement noises thedata centres need purpose-built perimeter noise cancelling wall panels. Con-formGroup, in collaboration with acoustic engineers, developed external acousticpanels specifically for dealing with this level of volume. Fully tunable Acoustic+UltraWall has a best-in-class Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.05. Anadaptation of that product, acoustic louvres, solved the issue of capturingnoise whilst ventilating machinery. Another challenge we answered was providingeasy access to chiller systems for maintenance crews. They needed a lightweightraised platform in order to reach the top-mounted fans. We designed and built theprefabricated Data Centre Raised Walkway. Often equipment has to be placed on asteel base or housed in an enclosure – we met that challenge with the lightgauge steel EasyFloor chassis. Other Con-form Group solutions includeultra-light HVAC platforms for metal and concrete roofs and a raised roofwalkway system.

The rows of chillers on the roofs of data centres produce alot of mechanical and aerodynamic noises. Some data centres have hundreds ofthem. These are typically much louder than HVAC&R systems on the othertypes of buildings that Con-form Group is familiar with (such as hospitals,commercial offices, industrial factories, universities and shopping centres). Datacentres are the noisiest of all of these sites. They require more powerfulsound absorbing panels. This factor led to us working with Acoustic Engineersto develop Australia’s first tunable acoustic sound products for data centres.With class-leading NRC of 1.05. Acoustic+ UltraWall© is an outdoor acoustic wallmade of interlocking panels…meanwhile Acoustic+ LouvreWall© providesventilation to mechanical equipment whilst also capturing unwanted noise. Ableto be tuned to match incoming frequencies and volumes, Acoustic+ can reducenoise by as much as 40 decibels.

A HVAC&R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning &Refrigeration) plant platform is a structural system designed to supportmechanical plant equipment. These HVAC mounting platforms are crucial for thesafe and efficient installation, operation and maintenance of HVAC&Rsystems. They are typically engineered to handle specific load requirements andto evenly distribute the weight of the HVAC&R system. This reduces thestructural stress on the building. Con-form Group plant decks feature lightgauge steel which significantly reduces the platform weight compared totraditional structural steel. Despite its lightness (as much as 83% less) aCon-form Group plant platform is capable of supporting the same weight asstructural steel. When the industry needed an alternative to structural steelwe responded with 3 first-of-their-kind options: EasyMech MR, apenetration-free HVAC platform for metal roofs…EasyMech CR for concrete roofs…

This is what we at Con-form Group call “surface mounting” or“penetration free”.  The roof is not penetrated at all. The bearers andtrusses of our HVAC mounting platform sit directly on the roof sheet above thepurlins - which are underneath the roof.

We take safety and compliance very seriously. In accordancewith AS1170.4 we secure our EasyMech MR© mechanical plant platforms to roofprofiles using engineer-certified seismic fixings. These fixing arecustom-designed to suit commonly used profiles such as Spandeck and Kliplok. Thisis how we are able to place these HVAC mounting platforms on top of the roofmaterial without any penetrations.

A Con-form Group concrete mounted HVAC plant platform is atype of rooftop platform placed on top of a concrete surface, such as aconcrete roof or ground slab. Our proprietary EasyMech CR© - designed in answerto the industry’s request for a lightweight HVAC platform for these hardsurfaces – features our proprietary seismic “feet”. They have Anti-Vibration,Anti-Noise Technology (AVANT) pads built into them. This prevents vibrationsfrom travelling down into the building structure. They are adjustable to allowfor the fall on the roof space. Each foot is rated to 1000kg load and the wholeplatform has a live load rating of 2.5kPa, 5.0kPa and greater.
