Eight three percent lighter! You read that right. 83% that is how much weight you save when you switch from using structural steel for a rooftop equipment platform to light gauge steel.
Our Engineering team used theoretical and physical testing to calculate the amazing difference. It was based on a common dimension and spec – a platform measuring 17.2 x 8.5 metres for a live loading of 2.5 kPa and placed on a 3-degree roof pitch.
The structural steel variant maxed out at 9572.7 kg, versus 1544 for our purlin-mount light gauge steel EasyMech MR.
The difference extends beyond weight. It impacts on the project costs. Less steel means less cost for materials. And less cost for crane hire – lighter components only require one crane lift to the roof, versus the continual need for a heavier crane to move each piece of structural steel. Plus less cost to install, because the light gauge steel sections can be hand-carried into place by a couple of people and completed in days, not months.
